What Is IPL?

IPL stands for (Intense Pulsed Light). Another common name for this treatment is a Photo Facial. This nonsurgical therapy is an effective and gentle way to attain smoother and more radiant skin.

IPL penetrates into the deepest layers of your skin, encouraging healing from the inside out. We even use IPL laser for broken capillaries. The hand held device emits pulses of broad spectrum light which pulls out impurities such as hyperpigmentation and age spots without damaging the skin around it.

How Does IPL Work?

The treatment works by heating the skin and removing unwanted cells, which helps eliminate the issues you are facing. Because it emits multiple wavelengths of pulsating light, it is able to address more than one skin condition at a time. Since the light does not damage healthy tissue, the healing process is quick!

Some of the things IPL can treat is

  • Acne
  • Birthmarks
  • Stretch Marks
  • Liver or age spots
  • Broken blood vessels
  • Hyper pigmentation
  • Dark spots from hormonal changes
  • Discolored skin
  • Fine wrinkles
  • Freckles
  • Redness from rosacea
  • Scars
  • Spider veins

Is IPL Safe for All Skin Types?

  1. Patients with either darker skin tones or skin that easily tans may not be great candidates for IPL therapy. Skin with higher melanin content may absorb an excess of light energy causing burning, skin damage, or scarring.
  2. If you are on any medications that cause photosensitivity, or if you have a condition that makes you extra sensitive to light, this therapy may not be for you.
  3. If you have a history of skin cancer, please discuss with your provider whether this treatment is appropriate for your skin.

  • Is IPL Therapy Painful?

Many patients will feel little or nothing at all, while some will notice a slight stinging or warming sensation.

A cooling gel cream or a topical numbing cream can be added to the skin before the procedure. Please ask our providers if you are concerned.

  • Is There a Recovery Period?

There is really no downtime needed after our treatment. This is one reason IPLs are so popular

You may experience a slightly flushed appearance as if you have spent a bit of time in the sun or maybe you just finished exercising.

  • How Long Will My IPL Results Last?

If you practice proper skin care and a sun protection routine after you’ve had your IPL Photofacial treatment, your results can last for years.

  • How Many Appointments Will I Need?

Most people only require a single maintenance treatment once a year

IPL therapy will not protect you from the effects of future UV radiation exposure, so you can expect your skin to develop more spots and discoloration over time.
